About the event

Why are wildfires larger and more frequent? What can people do to protect their homes from wildfire? Photography is a powerful tool to show the devastation and drama of wildfires.

34 years working for the US Forest Service has given Jurgen Hess experience in wildfire and forestry. As a press member (NPPA, CI,) he gets access to wildfires. He has given presentations to large groups at Portland State University and the Gorge Discovery Center and in every Gorge city. The focus of the presentations is to help people understand why fires are now more frequent and larger, and he explains the science and history of wildfire. He describes what you can do to protect your home from fire, such as Firewise measures.

Jurgen also produces photojournalism for Columbia Insight and is on their board. Columbia Insight is an

environmental news site focusing on science-based stories and issues of the Pacific Northwest environment.

He also focuses on landscape photography like the above photo taken from Lookout Mountain on the

flanks of Mt. Hood.
